What is Ikebana?
Ikebana (生け花 or いけばな)? "arranged flower"), is the Japanese art of flower arrangement. The art to create an arrangement by using only a small number of flowers or branches. In contrast to the massing of blooms typical of flower arrangement in western countries, Japanese flower arrangement strikes because of it’s simplicity and the concentration to the essential/basics. The Ikebana artist is trimming flowers, grass and leaves in a way that their natural beauty is further enhanced and expressed as result of his creativity. At the same time he learns to appreciate the opposites, the contrasts, the polarity, the abundance and the emptyness, the strong and the weak, the necessary and the unneccessary, the living and the withered and brings those in balance. There are many different schools of Ikebana, each teaching their own style, Sogetsu Ikebana being the most modern and popular style. The Sogetsu Ikebana School was founded by Sofu Teshigahara in 1927. Anyone can enjoy Sogetsu Ikebana anytime, anywhere, using any material.
